Mindset Matters – Shifting from Scarcity to Abundance
Day 7 of Clarity & Creativity
Mindset Matters in Business
Happy New Year!! 🎉 🥳 🤖 🎆 and welcome to Day 7 of 12 Days of Clarity and Creativity! Today, we’re exploring one of the most transformative aspects of personal and professional growth: your mindset. Specifically, we’re diving into the shift from a scarcity mindset—where fear of lack dominates—to an abundance mindset, where opportunities and possibilities flourish.
For therapists, coaches, creatives, and business nerds alike, mindset is foundational. It influences how we approach challenges, pursue opportunities, and perceive success. Let’s uncover how embracing abundance can fuel your growth in 2025 and beyond.
What Is a Scarcity Mindset?
A scarcity mindset is rooted in the fear that there’s not enough to go around—whether it’s time, money, clients, opportunities, or success. In the New Year, this mindset might show up as thoughts like:
“What’s the point of trying to grow my business?”
“There’s no way I can reduce my debt.”
“Why bother setting first-quarter goals?”
This kind of stuck thinking can lead to one or more of the following:
Inaction: Avoiding analysis, planning, or change.
Overwork: Taking on too much, overcommitting, or trying to do it all.
Control: Hesitating to decentralize, collaborate, or share resources.
Comparison: Perpetuating feelings of inadequacy by constantly comparing yourself to others.
Sound familiar? You’re not alone. This mindset often creeps in when things feel uncertain or competitive. The good news? You can shift your perspective.
What Is an Abundance Mindset?
Research shows that adopting an abundance mindset can improve resilience, creativity, and overall well-being (Emmons & McCullough, 2003).1 At its core, an abundance mindset is the belief that opportunities and resources are plentiful. It encourages:
Collaboration Over Competition
An abundance mindset thrives on the belief that we can achieve more together than alone. It means sharing ideas and resources freely, without fear of losing your edge.
You may hear me reference
’s insights often and wonder, “Why is that?” This is because Scott has spent years learning and leading in business, and one of his most compelling ideas is about decentralization:2Hierarchical communities are centralized and rely on compliance, conformity, and competition to control members. This makes for a dysfunctional and fragile social system.
Instead of building a hierarchical system centered around me or my business, I’m striving to create a decentralized community—one where collaboration, authenticity, and individual journeys are celebrated. It’s about supporting each other in building businesses that align with our unique paths, not competing for a limited slice of the pie.

Confidence in Your Unique Path
An abundance mindset also means believing there’s enough success for everyone.
For example, some therapists worry there aren’t enough clients to sustain their practices. But the truth is, there are not enough therapists to meet the needs of all the clients out there! The issue often isn’t competition—it’s visibility. Clients haven’t heard about you yet. Shifting your mindset to abundance means focusing on getting the word out and trusting in your unique value.
An abundance mindset also means loving your unique path. As
recently posted, embracing your individuality and strengths is key to creating meaningful progress.Stop comparing yourself to others. It’s hard to avoid tuning into what everyone else is doing, who just got the latest raise or promotion, or who’s moving into a new house or going on a fancy vacation. But social comparison is one of the biggest barriers to our overall happiness and motivation. Redirecting attention to our own internal standards for success and making progress based on what’s realistic for us—instead of getting caught up in how we measure up to others—can go a long way for our psychological health and productivity (Richardson & Luckman, S. (2025).3
Creative Problem-Solving
An abundance mindset focuses on what’s possible rather than what’s lacking. It encourages you to think outside the box and approach challenges with curiosity.
