Where to Start with Podcasting
Have you given up on starting your podcast this year? Updated 11/26/24
So I have been podcasting for about a year now
I started my side hustle last year and I thought,
How do I get myself out there?
And I realized that podcasting and blogging was a way to start.
I’d listened to hundreds of hours of other podcasters so I thought I had the gist.
And I just did it.
I had been blogging since 2015 with my first business but I was not exactly sure how to podcast.
I already was paying for MS Teams and I had the free version of Clip Champ (for editing) downloaded.
For my dissertation in 2023, we used MS Teams for presenting so I was getting used to that.
And I am an introvert and am often terrified of speaking!
I googled how to record myself and I wrote a script in PowerPoint and added some slides and recorded myself.
I googled how to start a YouTube channel and started one.
Same for Spotify…
So here are my two cents for newbie podcasters.
Steps for Starting a Podcast
Determining what the goal is for your podcast is important
For me, it is to share business building tips to make business less difficult for others. I also advertise my offers on my podcast. I interview other entrepreneurs to help us grow together as well and to get their offers out there.
The goal of your podcast can help with determining the topics for your podcast.
Choosing a platform can be important
I know everyone raves about Substack but I cannot say enough how great this platform is for blogging and podcasting! I mean I just deleted my Spotify that was not doing so well so that I could connect Substack to a new Spotify channel for my podcast and it looks way better and it is simpler.
I do think there is a way to connect to YouTube too but my YouTube channel is doing fine so I will keep them separate. (Also I share different content on both channels for specific marketing purposes).
Work Smarter Not Harder
Use the tech you already have or that is inexpensive or free if possible. Do you have a phone or laptop? Do you have headphones with a microphone? Start with what you have, listen to it and edit it and then don’t over think it.
Market Your Podcast
It really isn’t too difficult to start a podcast but marketing one can be difficult.
Determining your target audience can be part of this. My target audience are business nerds, creatives, therapists, coaches, and generally people who ant to start a side hustle.
Paying attention to the analytics of each program you use to determine what people are listening to and engaging with can help you determine where to go next with your marketing.

Resisting the Social Media Spiral
I feel like I have been stuck in a social media spiral for months. I add my posts and sometimes people interact but sometimes they do not. I feel like I get stuck “doom scrolling,” as the kids call it these days, and sometimes time passes without my notice and I don’t feel good about it.

I've been going back and forth on podcasting for so long. Like you I've listened to so many podcasts but after I got sick with Long Covid, that number went from hundreds to thousands. I get so frustrated when people say that the market is saturated. Really? I'm pretty sure it just decided an election. A lot of room for it to grow. Looking forward to watching your journey.
Great tips!
